Special thanks to Philip for running the line for us today.
We descended on Wantage and found that they’d provided a programme, nice touch!!! Lovely facilities and a really nice club house. Today we welcomed along Mary for her debut and I very nearly ruined it for her by standing on her knee….sorry!!
We lost the toss so ended up kicking off downhill. We didn’t start particularly well but defended resolutely and grew into the match. We won a free kick on the left which CD placed into the far corner of the net to give us the lead. We shuffled things around but our formation wasn’t working with too many bitty performances. We worked so hard to win the ball but our movement off the ball and holding the ball up left a lot to be desired. We conceded after about 35 minutes when a ball over the top caught 2 Wantage strikers at least 2m off side but no flag and they proceeded to beat Lou easily. We huffed and puffed but didn’t really get our shots away or make their keeper work.
Kicking uphill in the second half we were going to have to work hard, we worked industriously with the defence under seemingly constant pressure we dug in and repelled all attacks. Going forward we showed moments of bright play but couldn’t find the net. Wantage had changed formation to flood the midfield and put pressure on our defence. We held out until the 88th minute when disaster struck, we cleared our lines but didn’t have enough players back and the ball pinged straight back over the defence for one of their players to latch onto and beat Lou to win the game for Wantage.
Next week we’re at home to Caversham.
